Knicks star Jalen Brunson sustains ‘knee contusion’ vs. Cavaliers, Tom Thibodeau says

CLEVELAND (AP) — The New York Knicks had All-Star guard Jalen Brunson on their roster for a change. Following Brunson’s injury-related first-quarter exit due to a damaged left knee on Sunday night, the Knicks battled back to defeat the Cavaliers 107-98, demonstrating their resilience and unity even more. In the opening minute, Brunson, who scores 27.2 points a game on average, was hurt while trying a jump jumper over Cleveland’s Isaac Okoro. Near the foul, Brunson came off a screen, raised himself without making contact, and slumped to the ground. Fans in New York were relieved when Knicks coach Tom Thibodeau said after the game that Brunson’s knee X-rays came back negative.

“It’s a contusion in the knee,” Thibodeau remarked with ease. He gave his knees a bump. That’s the actual event. The doctor examined him and took X-rays. Everything was bad. We’ll check up on him tomorrow. The 27-year-old Brunson fired an airball during the play, and when he came back down, his legs split awkwardly. He stumbled in the direction of the 3-point line before collapsing to the ground and visibly hurting his left leg. While play went on, Brunson sat on the ground. He stood up for a little while, then hobbled to the sidelines and sat down again. According to a replay, Brunson collided with Knicks center Isaiah Hartenstein on the first play of New York’s possession while he was moving past his teammate who was setting up a screen for him.

Following the game,

Brunson did not show up on the bench. Tuesday is the Knicks’ home game against Atlanta. Brunson, a superb scorer, has been the Knicks’ pillar of support throughout a difficult period of injuries. Starting players Julius Randle (shoulder), Mitchell Robinson (ankle), and O.G. Anunoby (elbow), who all traveled and are almost ready to return, have not been available for them. While Brunson was replaced by Miles McBride, who played the final 47 minutes for New York and finished with 16 points and a game-winning 3-pointer with 33 seconds remaining, Josh Hart recorded a triple-double with 13 points, 19 rebounds, and 10 assists.

In 39 minutes, Donte DiVincenzo scored 28 points to lead the Knicks. As a free agent in 2022, Brunson signed a four-year, $104 million contract with the Knicks, with whom he is currently in his second season. Brunson played for the Dallas Mavericks throughout his first four NBA seasons.
