Europa League roundup: Loftus-Cheek double powers Milan to win over Rennes

Europa League

TAC Milan produced an excellent team performance to beat Stade Rennais in their Europa League first-round match at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza. Ruben Loftus-Cheek was the hero as he scored either side of the break and Rafael Leo added a third to seal the deal, a fine performance from the side.

News From Milanello

“Milan” was in a good position, especially after the victory over “Napoli”. The win was important, honorable and double, allowing them to consolidate their position in third and second (one point behind) in Serie A. The Rossoneri play at home, which this making the first environment more sensitive and important. Pioli recently missed Calabria (muscle problem) but Reinders is back after suspension and Thiago is back after a long break. The European commitment could make some changes in the squad, especially in defence, between Terracciano and Hernandez in reserve. The forwards are Okafor and Jovic.

“European games are tough,” Pioli told a news conference. “We have plenty of time to learn; they are talented and play a lot of football on the pitch. They can create chances at any time and they have to concentrate and not care.” Matteo Gabbia added: “The real team they are. Good players, direct, fast and strong.. We know what to expect and we have prepared the game well.”

Latest From Stade Rennais

Stade Rennais is in a great location. They have been winning since mid-December and are the best team in Ligue 1, where they have contributed to a spectacular and sustained comeback (better record than Paris Saint-Germain). The are currently in 7th place and beat Le Havre 1-0 on Sunday thanks to a goal from Burigo. They also played well in the French Cup where they reached the 1/4 finals. Borijoud is an excellent player and one of the most exciting players in the team created by Stephane. Other major threats include Kalimuendo, Gouiri and Teriri. They usually line up in a 4-4-2, with Mandanda (like the captain) and Thiet providing strength in defence. And Fee and Rieder are gone.

“We’re competing against top-notch opponents,” Julian Stephan said before the game. Milan have a history in Europe, in the Champions Europa League and they have very strong players, we respect their history. There are risks everywhere, but we are well prepared, starting with a lot of pressure. ”
