Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, the highest-ranking Jewish elected official in US history and a prominent advocate for Israel in Congress, has stated his view on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s conflict with Hamas with Hamas to be an obstacle to peace. “It is time for new leadership to emerge through democratic elections.” “Prime Minister Netanyahu has done everything he can to put his political career ahead of Israel’s interests,” Schumer said.

Split with Republicans
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., spoke after Schumer’s speech to reaffirm his support for Netanyahu. “The Jewish state of Israel deserves to be the only ally,” McConnell said. At a GOP House retreat in West Virginia, Republican leaders held an inappropriate press conference to criticize Schumer. House Speaker Mike Johnson said he was “shocked” by the comments after learning of them during a work session.
