It’s time for the Tar Heels to play their first quarterfinal matchup of the ACC Tournament versus Florida State. Naturally, UNC is fresh off a victory over Duke that awarded them both the regular season championship and the number one seed in the tournament. To get here today, Florida State defeated Virginia Tech on Wednesday.
Earlier in the season, the Seminoles and Heels squared off in two close games at Chapel Hill and Tallahassee. In the Smith Center matchup, Carolina enjoyed a commanding lead before FSU rallied to get it close. That one ended with a 78-70 victory for UNC. The previous time these teams faced off, Carolina weathered some difficulties on the road but managed to win toughly 75-68 to end a 10-game winning streak.
Seeing how teams in the tournament are affected by rest vs rhythm is always a fascinating wrinkle. Receiving a double-bye allows you to win the tournament without having to play more than three games straight, although occasionally the team that progressed performs really well.
