Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony-winning actress Rita Moreno says she didn’t always want to be Hispanic. In an interview with Hoda Kotb on the Today Show, Moreno said she felt “inappropriate and useless” as a Puerto Rican immigrant in New York. As Moreno said, “I didn’t want to be Spanish for a very long time.” It took me a while to start feeling inadequate, unattractive, and that I wasn’t Latino.”

Moreno, 92, said he faces discrimination in Hollywood and recording studios. And said it took years of psychotherapy to clear her doubts. She revealed more about her struggle in the 2021 documentary Rita Moreno: The Girl Who Decided to Lose Her Hair. Despite the difficulties, Moreno managed a successful career that lasted seven years. He broke barriers for Latin artists and won many awards. In 1961, she became the first Latina to win an Academy Award for her portrayal of Anita in West Side Story.

Moreno is currently promoting his new film Prank, in which he plays an evil physics professor. He confirmed that he will star in The Horror Film alongside Harvey Keitel, Roselyn Sanchez and Udo Kirre. Moreno replied, “The secret is to be young at heart with laughing.” I enjoy laughing, especially when I’m laughing with other people. My problems are hard sometimes.
