A member of the Rothschild banking dynasty, financier Lord Jacob Rothschild died at the age of 87. His family referred to Lord Rothschild as “a towering presence in many peoples’ lives” in a statement released on Monday.
He started his work at NM Rothschild & Sons, the family bank, and then launched his wealth management fund.He was well known for being a very giving man. Former Prime Minister Tony Blair called his “dear friend” a “wonderful human being” and paid respect to him.
Born in Berkshire in 1936,
Lord Rothschild studied history at Eton College and then Christ Church, Oxford. Once he and his cousin Sir Evelyn de Rothschild had a falling out, he departed the family bank in 1980. He had joined in 1963.
After that, he established the investment trust RIT Capital, which he chaired until 2019, and expanded his financial empire in the City of London. According to the previous year’s Sunday Times Rich List, the Rothschild family was estimated to be worth around £825 million. According to a statement issued by his family, Lord Rothschild was “a wonderfully achieved financier, a promoter of culture and the arts, a dedicated public servant, an ardent advocate of charitable organizations in the nation of Israel and Jewish culture, an avid activists and much-loved friend, father, and grandfather.”
Furthermore, Lord held positions as deputy chairman of BSkyB Television, director of RHJ International, now known as BHF Kleinwort Benson Group, and member of the council for the Dukes of Cornwall on the behalf of the Prince of Wales at the time. Sir Tony Blair expressed his sympathies to the Rothschild family and said he will truly miss his friend.
“He was most obviously an iconic figure in the British Jewish community yet his influence was worldwide in his support for great reasons, particularly in the arts and environmental issues, and his tireless efforts for promoting stability in the Middle East.”
Among his many acts of support
were his chairmanship of the National Lottery Heritage Fund and his lifelong support of the National Gallery. Where he presided over the board of trustees from 1985 to 1991. The National Gallery expressed sadness upon learning of his passing on the former Twitter platform X.
“Jacob was a philanthropist, businessman, entrepreneur, and cultural leader. His family and loved ones are in our thoughts and prayers.” Before she passed away in 2019, Lady Serena Rothschild and Lord were wed for over 50 years. Their family consisted of four kids.
The Rothschild banking family originated in Frankfurt in the eighteenth century. And family members subsequently moved to various European locations to expand their banking enterprises. Sir Evelyn de Rothschild, the cousin of Lord Jacob, chaired NM Rothschild from 1976 to 2003 and is believed to have coached Queen Elizabeth II on financial concerns.
