Commanders trade QB Sam Howell for draft picks

Sam Howell is currently moving, NFL Network Insider Tom Pelissero revealed on Thursday that the quarterback is being traded by the Washington Commanders to the Seattle Seahawks in what essentially amounts to a selection swap. In return for a 2024 third-rounder (No. 78) and a 2024 fifth-rounder (No. 152), Washington will receive Howell, a 2024 fourth-round pick (No. 102 overall), with a 2024 sixth-round selection (No. 179).

The teams later verified the agreement’s terms.

As Dan Quinn took coach Ron Rivera’s seat after the Commanders ousted Howell’s biggest ally, Quinn, Howell’s future in Washington started to look increasingly bleak. The team now has an experienced, low-ceiling option in Marcus Mariota, who was signed by general manager Adam Peters this week. This comes before Howell was shopped, with the idea that Washington will select a quarterback with the second overall pick in the April draft.

After playing as the team’s starting quarterback for one season. During which he showed promise as a playmaker, particularly when operating outside of the structure. Howell leaves Washington. However, he was unable to maintain the consistency required to establish himself as an NFL starter. Howell suffered the penalties of playing too much outside of himself and becoming. More and more of a turnover machine as Washington’s season came to an end.

Rivera was ready to bench Howell in favor of seasoned backup Jacoby Brissett. But Brissett’s injury during the middle of the week kept. Howell in the starting lineup until he lost his position entirely. It was obvious that Rivera would leave by the end of the year. And Howell could follow him out the door. Howell is heading out of Washington for an intriguing opportunity in Seattle. Where Geno Smith is still the team’s starting quarterback after a season that fell short of. The lofty standards Smith had set for himself following his spectacular 2022 performance. The Seahawks are taking a low-risk chance on Sam. Who might gain from spending a year or two learning behind an experienced signal-caller. With two years remaining on Smith’s contract.
